The civil rights movement worked to reform society in the 1950s and 1960s so that minorities, especially African Americans, would have equal access to opportunities. These initiatives sparked legal action and modifications to education law.

In addition to successfully opposing legal segregation, the American Civil Rights Movement sparked a cultural revolution that altered American music, fashion, and society. Singers in the folk, blues, and gospel genres developed rhythms and harmonies to propel the march for racial equality.
