Feminism can be understood as a movement to eradicate sexism, sexist oppression, and exploitation as well as to achieve complete gender equality in both law and practice.

Women's suffrage, increased educational access, pay parity with men, the ability to file for divorce, the right of women to make their own reproductive decisions (including access to contraceptives and abortion), and the ability to own property are all changes brought about by the feminist movement in Western society.
